Domaine La Lauzeta Mezura 2016

Although only established in 2015 by Englishman Tom Hills, the 23 hectare Domaine La Lauzeta has garnered rave reviews over the past couple of years for the purity and integrity of the wines (Jeb Dunnuck describes ‘La Lauzeta’ as ‘maybe the greatest Saint-Chinian I’ve tasted’). Based at Saint-Nazaire-de-Ladarez straddling the Saint-Chinian and Saint-Chinian Roquebrun AOCs, the largely old vines are planted on clay and schist up to 300 metres above sea level. This combined with the long hot Summers and mellow Autumns, gives up wines of great depth and complexity with a pronounced minerality and spiciness. Mezura is a blend of 60% Syrah, 25% Grenache and 15% Carignan grown on schist from very low yielding vineyards. It is aged for 12 months in new French oak. In organic conversion, it is neither filtered nor fined.

A dark ruby red in the glass. Scents of black cherries, dark plums and crushed spices. On the palate, medium-bodied with spicy notes and complex layers of black fruit flavours. A beautifully balanced wine. Great with Toulouse sausage, crispy duck or even brandade of cod wrapped in beetroot leaves.
